December 2007
Tony Lockett
Following the death of John Rowlands in early 2007
Tony Lockett was elected President at the Annual General Meeting
in November.
The club is especially proud of this appointment as Tony was the
Chief Race Officer at the Athens Olympics in 2004.
Tony joined the club in 1968 and during that time has held many
Committee positions; Secretary, Championship Secretary and Commodore,
holding this role once in 1977- 79 and again in 2002 - 3.
He has also ensured that his name has appeared on quite a number
of the trophies in the club, as a more than competent sailor.
One of his contributions to the world of sailing as been in the
field of Race Management- the scheme for the RYA was developed by
Tony starting from club level to regional and them to national level..
He is renowned for his training of Race Officers all over the world
and it is only now that he is retiring from touring the world and
fronting these seminars.
He leaves a fitting legacy behind in his book- 'Racing
Signals- a guide for Race Officers'.
It is with youth race management that he is particularly well known
in the U.K- having been P.R.O. to the U.K. Youth Championships for
10 years and it is the quality imposed by Tony that has helped set
the standards which have enabled Great Britain reap so many sailing
Gold medals at the Olympics.
He has worked tirelessly on numerous Committees for both the R.Y.A.
and I.S.A.F. and is still a member of the RYA Council.
Having travelled all over the world as a Race Officer he was heavily
involved in the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and followed this with
the acceptance of a prestigious award by the RYA. in recognition
of his service and dedication to sailing.
Finally, in 2004 Tony was awarded the distinction of being the Principal
Race Officer in the Athens Olympics.
He is now in retirement mode but has been Championship Secretary
for the last 3 years, ensuring the club has classes booking to return
to us year after year; and as Chairman of the Re-development committee
he is steering the club towards refurbishment and possible extensions. |
